In recent months, manufacturers of dye-sublimation printers have received an increasing number of complaints about poor print quality and/or printer malfunctions. Investigations have shown that, in virtually all cases, the causes can be traced to the use of printing media (ribbon and paper) that are not supplied by the printer manufacturer itself, but by third-party manufacturers.
We’ve been familiar with compatible products in photography for a long time—for example, in the case of processing chemicals—but they are not only commonplace in the field of digital imaging, they are also well established—for example, with inks and papers for inkjet printers.
So what are the downsides of photo printers that use dye-sublimation technology? Plenty!
